Understanding the West Berkshire Countryside Society   Archive Index

 Background

The Archive consists of very many documents handed down from the various organisations who have worked at conserving the West Berkshire Countryside and its wildlife from the mid 1990s to the present day. These were the Pang Valley Conservation Trust, The Pang Valley Countryside Project (later expanded to cover the Kennet and the Lambourn), the Pang, Kennet and Lambourn Countryside Project FWAG, the Pang Valley Barn Owl Group, the Bucklebury Common Conservation Group, the Pang Valley Conservation Volunteers, (now the West Berkshire Conservation Volunteers) and the West Berkshire Countryside Society

It also contains a library of valuable documents relating to the West Berkshire countryside, Such as undergraduate theses, consultants’ reports, books and leaflets of various kinds. Many of these date from the pre-computer era and are likely to be the only copies in existence. They have proved very useful in discussions with bodies such as Thames Water and the Environment Agency who issued the documents but no longer have copies and have tried to ignore or forget the commitments made by their predecessors

Organisation of the Archive

  • The index is in the form of an Excel spreadsheet
  • There are four classes of document.

1)  The File Name ‘Dignnn’  indicates a digital file held in the WBCS

digital archive.

  • The File Name ‘Fnnn’ indicates a packet containing a number of

documents relating to the same subject or group – for example the Pang Valley Conservation Volunteers - and organised in date order. Examples are letters, minutes etc.

3)   The File Name ‘Lnnn’  Indicates a record about a single subject such as a river survey, a report or a publication.

4)   The WBCS quarterly newsletter and those of its predecessors. The archive contains a complete sequence of these. These are held in separate ring binders.

            Accessing the Archive

The archive is open to any researcher – not only Society members. Request documents via enquiries@westberkscountryside.org.uk. A number of the archive documents are books, copies of which can be purchased via the “Publications for sale” page of the web site.

Please use the index below to scan for documents which may be of interest to you. The full index file has two additional columns which include details of some of the contents of most  of the file so to refine your search please feel free to download the full Excel file HERE
